Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT) uses a liquid penetrant to detect surface-breaking defects. It works on all non-porous materials including stainless steel, aluminium, and non-magnetic metals.

Both methods are complementary — MPT is generally more sensitive for near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials, while DPT works on a wider range of materials for open surface defects.
